Glasgow DJ Kevin McKay talks Danny Tenaglia's celebrated remix of "So Get Up" by Underground Sound of Lisbon ft. Ithaka

WATCH HERE: https://fb.watch/IUoHmR1wK0/

“I never forget the first time I heard this record. Back in 1994 when Danny Tenaglia was playing in Glasgow for the first time. He was playing Harry & Oscar’s Sunday Night at the Voodoo Room. Every DJ in the town was there and this is the one they were all talking about the week after. This was New York house but not as we new it. Glasgow was always big on heavy records. So when Danny Tenaglia and Junior Vasquez started taking that Bew York sound and wrapping it up with acid noises and razor sharp synths. Glasgow was all over it. And the minute the voice* comes out of this record, “the end of the earth is upon us” everyone on the dance floor was like, what the fuck is this? And the beats and the groove and the analog that followed the whole place went absolutely crazy. I remember trying to track it down the next week. It wasn’t out yet. And when the promo finally arrived in my door. I was like, “Oh yes, I cannot wait to play this”. But the the trouble with that vocal is because it’s so iconic, it became overplayed. So I only got to play it a few times. I dug it out again recently to see whether it would still work. And boy does it still work. This is the Underground Sound of Lisbon (ft. Ithaka) with “So Get Up”, Danny Tenaglia’s “In The Light We Sleep Mix” on Tribal 1994. Check it out”
So get up, forget the past

The rarely credited vocals of the iconic song "So Get Up'" were written and vocalized by Greek-Californian Ithaka Darin Pappas (known more frequently by his mononym Ithaka).

1990's Portuguese Rave Compilation

A New Compilation Series Recaptures the ’90s Heyday of Rave in Portugal By April Clare Welsh · June 27, 2019   In 1994, Portugal’s dance music scene was thriving. Urban clubs and bars were offering a vibrant mix of European trance, acid house, Detroit techno, and house music from New York and Chicago. Secret raves were starting to emerge throughout the nation. During the summer of that year, a significant event took place at a medieval castle in Santa Maria da Feira, featuring New York’s Danny Tenaglia and Dutch DJ Jaydee as the main performers. This event represented a crucial turning point in the evolution of Portuguese rave culture. Simultaneously, Portugal’s alternative, underground party scene was also flourishing. The notorious U.K. free party collective, Spiral Tribe, arrived in 1996 and established themselves at Fonte da Telha, close to Costa da Caparica. Together with four other soundsystem collectives—Total Resistance, APA, Kamikaze, and Furious—they organized a series of events in hidden venues across the country. “There were raves in castles, convents—stuff like that,” recalls João Ervedosa, also known as DJ Shcuro/José Acid, whose Lisbon label Paraíso draws inspiration from the sounds of that time. “Beyond the club scene, there was this significant trance movement. People were traveling to Portugal from all over the globe.” These years were also pivotal for recorded dance music. Kaos Records, the nation’s first electronic label established by Portuguese producers Rui da Silva and DJ Vibe alongside promoter António Cunha, released key records from The Ozone and Urban Dreams; the track “So Get Up” (a remix of the iconic 1992 downtempo track by Ithaka aka artist Ithaka Darin Pappas) made by the Underground Sound of Lisbon became a defining anthem, and New York icon Junior Vasquez was the first U.S. DJ to spin the single during his set at Sound Factory. (It was subsequently licensed to the label Tribal America, accompanied by remixes from Vasquez and Danny Tenaglia.) This moment signified the onset of a lasting partnership between New York house and Portuguese dance music.

Paraiso - Danny Tenaglia "So Get Up"

Paraíso will premiere at Lisbon’s independent film festival IndieLisboa this Sunday (4th May), and features “first-hand testimonies” from 38 contributors, many considered pioneers of Portuguese dance music. Among the contributors are former long-running Lux Frágil resident Yen Sung and ‘Touch Me’ hit-maker Rui da Silva. Danny Tenaglia also makes an appearance; he remixed Underground Sound of Lisbon’s era-defining classic ‘So Get Up’ (
written and vocalized by Ithaka Darin Pappas)and famously played at the Santa Maria da Feira medieval castle rave in 1994. The illuminating 78-minute film maps out a dance music movement that took root in the early ‘90s during the emergence of rave culture. Knitted together from hours of never-before-seen home footage, Paraíso takes viewers backstage at parties and straight to the heart of 5,000-person raves in castles. The extensive VHS archives were amassed from private collectors and national broadcasters Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) and Sociedade Independente de Comunicação (SIC). https://djmag.com/news/new-documentary-explores-90s-rave-culture-portugal

So Get Up (first written and recorded by Ithaka Darin Pappas in 1992) higher-frequency.com

Skrufff : When Touch Me topped the pop charts in 2001, that was almost the peak of dance music as far as crossing over to the mainstream is concerned, how was that whole experience ? Rui Da Silva : Having that hit gave me an identity which was not necessarily what my music was about, because I'd already been making underground dance music for over eight years before that from Lisbon, having great success with the records being played by everybody around the world. Skrufff : I looked up the lyrics... Rui Da Silva :The lyrics are so like 2001 they are scary, which is crazy because the track was first written and recorded Ithaka Darin Pappas, or Ithaka in 1992. He is an artist from LA who was living in Portugal at the time, he used to MC at the parties we used to throw in Portugal and at raves. He was also a poet and used to write loads of things, and I revisited his poem in late 1993 to put on a record and tried to give it more of a DJ Pierre feeling by repeating of the vocal. We pressed a couple of records onto vinyl and sent the record around the world, then it became a big hit all around. It still gets played everywhere actually. Last year I went to see a big DJ spin at Turmills and I was really looking forward to hearing him because I'd never heard him play and he opened with the 'So Get Up' accapella. I though 'Oh right, nothing changes'. Skrufff : Who was the DJ ? Rui Da Silva : John Creamer.

‘Touch Me ft. Cassandra Fox broke the Pop Format

U.K. lyricist/vocalist, Cassandra Fox

Prior to ‘Touch Me’, Da Silva had already experienced success in the dance-music arena via his partnership with DJ Vibe as Underground Sound of Lisbon.

The pair’s ‘So Get Up’, a 1994 remix of Ithaka's 1992 iconic vocal-poem song (also entitled "So Get Up").

defined by its bottom-end and oft-sampled series of Ithaka's shouted commands “Get up! Forget the past!” was one of the best. The track became an international club smash that hit particularly hard in NYC, where it became something of an unofficial mid-’90s theme song for Junior Vasquez and Danny Tenaglia.

Two acapella versions of "So Get Up" (a song that changed the entire electronic-music economy of Portugal during the 1990's) were released by USL in the United States by Tribal America, a subsidiary of E.M.I. without ANY authorization from the lyricist/vocalist. Ithaka, an award-winning hip hop vocalist and songwriter, was not paid royalties or even given a featuring credit on his own raw vocal. In 1995, the USL version charted at #83 on the UK pop charts. In 1997, Stretch N Vern's "Get Up! Go Insane!", using the same vocal recording, charted at #17 (UK). Meat Katie also had success in the late 1990's with "Next Life" using the same acapella. In 2013, Cosmic Gate reworked "So Get Up" into a trance version stadium banger, becoming one of the duo's most recognizable songs, (again, using the existing acapella with No vocal credit given)... even manufacturing T-Shirts utilizing Ithaka's lyrics, with no mention of the author. The release of the uncredited 1994 acapella versions had created a snowball effect of illegal "So Get Up" remix versions that continues until the present. Today (in 2020), with more than one-thousand released remixes, it is The Most Remixed Vocal Acapella In Musical History, yet vocally/lyrically, it largely remains anonymous. When credit has been given on the subsequent mixes of "So Get Up", which is rare, it is normally given to Underground Sound Of Lisbon whose version was the first to bring Ithaka's vocal-poem to public attention even if none of USL's music is actually present on the new mix or release. Ithaka's vocal poem "So Get Up" has been musically interpreted by producers of literally every sub-genre of electronic music; Progressive House, Deep House, Techno, Tech House, Trance, Dream Trance, Big Beat, Drum n Bass, Trip Hop, Downtempo, Hardcore, Gabber etc etc etc... and has appeared by the alternative titles of; "See You In The Next Life", "Forget The Past", "The End Of The Earth", "Hardventure", "Headcharge", "Belther", "Last Resurrection, "PPF (Past, Present, Future)", "Intensity", "Soultech!", "Phat Prick", "Trance Line", "Have A Blast!" etc, etc, etc. "So Get Up" and it's derivatives have sold (unofficially) 30,000,000+ copies since 1993. DJ Vibe (of Underground Sound of Lisbon) And Music Journalist Lauren Martin (DJ MAG) Talk About The Origins Of The Eternal "So Get Up"

Lauren Martin and DJ Vibe discuss “So Get Up” (Red Bull Music Academy lecture series)

Lauren Martin and DJ Vibe discuss “So Get Up” (Red Bull Music Academy lecture series)

In September of 2019, world-renowned electronic music journalist and editor Lauren Martin interviewed DJ Vibe (António Pereira), the iconic Portuguese DJ, for the Red Bull Music Academy lecture series. During the course of the one-hour long conversation the two spoke five full minutes specifically about the song “So Get Up” which undoubtedly transformed DJ Vibe’s personal career and in fact the entire electronic music economy of Portugal in the 1990’s.
When asked about the recording and the distribution of the song “So Get Up” and how it ‘changed everything’, Vibe spoke at length about now-deceased Kaos Records label owner/promotor António Cunha, co-member of Underground Sound of Lisbon, Rui da Silva and Rob Di Stefano manager of Tribal U.S.A. records which distributed the initial international release of “So Get Up” selling 80,000 copies).

He also speaks of DJ Junior Vasquez who had the recorded exclusively for a full year at the NY’s Sound Factory and created a buzz around the recording, but Dj Vibe fails to even mention the lyricist/vocalist, Greek-Californian Ithaka (Ithaka Darin Pappas), whose rerecording of his 1992 English-language vocal poem, So Get Up, The End Of The Earth Is Upon Us for Underground Sound Of Lisbon, certainly aided in the globalization of Underground Sound of Lisbon, Kaos Records, DJ Vibe, Rui da Silva and Portuguese electronic music in general.
Ithaka had originally written and recorded “So Get Up” on December 13th 1992 for Rádio Comercial – Lisbon, then in Februrary of 1993 recorded an electro version in Manchester for demo of his album project, So Get Up & The Lost Acapellas which was not immediately released.

Underground Sound of lisbon’s “So Get Up” enjoyed wide international success (#83 on the U.K. pop charts in 1994). But apparently, for marketing reasons, So Get Up was presented as a 100% Portuguese creation – even though the lyricist and vocalist was a Californian, briefly living in Portugal, and the song was written and recorded in English.
Ithaka Darin Pappas was largely not credited with his contribution on the new version of his own song.
Furthermore, both Underground Sound Of Lisbon’s label, (Kaos Records, Portugal) and their international distributor Tribal USA (EMI), headed by Rob Di Stefano, released several acapellas of Ithaka’s voice and lyrics without a visible credit, causing a snowball of anonymous bootleg versions and remixes.
In 1997, Stretch n Vern released “Get Up! Go Insane!”, principally using the hook lines of Ithaka’s “So Get Up”, becoming a #17 pop hit in the United Kingdom. “Get Up! Go Insane!”, was also used in a highly-visible Samsung printer commercial in Korea starring movie actress Jun Ji-Hyun. According to all of her biographic accounts, the commercial turned her into a “popular sensation”. The dancing around to “Get Up! Go Insane!” and the attitude expressed in the commercial’s footage made her into an icon for Koreans in their late teens and early twenties.
In 2013, German trance super stars Cosmic Gate, licensed Ithaka’s entire So Get Up vocal for their track coincidentally entitled “So Get Up” (again without a featured lyric/vocal credit to Ithaka). So Get Up became known as one of their best tracks, a ‘stadium banger’ as it was called by DJ MAG. They even manufactured a line of shirts with Ithaka’s lyrics printed on them, with no mention of the author.
By 2020, there have possibly been more than one-thousand remixes of Ithaka’s 1993 vocal acapella recording of So Get Up, becoming one of the most remixed acapellas in musical history. It appears under many alternative titles such as “Get Up”, “Insane”, “Get Up, Go Insane!”, “Next Life”, “See You In The Next Life” “The End Of The Earth”, “Hardventure”, “Headcharge”, “Belther”, “Last Resurrection”, “PPF (Past Present Future)”, “Intensity”, “Forget The Past”, “Trance Line”, “Viginti Etduo”, “Have A Blast”, “Turn To Dust”, “Alien Life Forms, Goodbye My Friends”, “Jet Airplane”, “Speed O.J.”, “Zombie”, etc..
“So Get Up” remix artists include: Armin Van Buuren, Fatboy Slim, Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez, Dj Vibe, Oxia, Peter Bailey, Orion’s Voice, JJ Mullor, Dani Sbert, Lexington Avenue, Dylan, Derek Marin, Public Domain, K-Traxx, Technoboy, Bob Ray & Van Dyuk, Ben Gold, Pelari, Miss Kittin, Dave Seaman, Dade (ITA), Carlos Walker, Alien Project, Second Nature, Pomella, John Neiland, Br1an, DJ Healer, Traumprinz, Joseph LP, Rab-Beat , Pirro, Matheu, Neanderthal Phonogram, Omar Lopez, Liquid Viking, MotivBreaks, Chaka & Marty, Jay Dahbi, Hu Bee, Frankyeffe, Township Rebellion, Rui Flip, Dani Villa, Rodri Vegas, Dr. Funk, ZRG, Swing Kings, Acti, Antolini, DANTEE, Alternative Journey, Nell Silva, Geometric Dark, Pepo, Pacho, Club Atlas, Branko, Buraka Som Sistema, Alex Di Stefano, TNT, Zatox, Marc Hartman, Meat Katie, DJ Dũng Tí , Future Plays, Manu Kenton, Dejay D, Ozy & Ash, Derk Marin, Marcel, Doppeldosen, Maik Ibane, Cubik, Checo Zak, Fuelo Ruedo, Paradigm X, Samir Kuliev, Lee Burridge, Razat, Alex Page, DJ Kryst-Off, Breaker, Micromakine, Gu’Brian, Trolley Snatcha, Mr. Argenis, Let’s Try, Audio Noir, Peace Maker, Ninja, Cab Thomas, Loose Effects, JJ Mullor, Dani Sbert, Atmozfears, Igor Carmo, Pelari, Ben Gold, Koozah, Slow Panpot, Furio Levant, Bob Ray, Van Dyuk, Morgana DJ, Damien Blaze, Audio Noir, Hardwell, Agustin Servente, Matias Chavez, HeatBeat, Danny Garlick, Hakan Sarugil, Cassien Jean, Marco Calanni, Bageera, Black Force, Horizon, DJ Pibert, Outworld, Plusculaar, Mike Steventon & Tone, Bart Skils, Peace Maker, Philippe Rochard, Andrea Doria & Dino Lenny, 2 DJs In A Room, Steve Hill & Technikal, Seikos, Dantime, Maziano, Lochness DJ Team, DJ Zorneus, Phunk Investigation, Sharp & Smooth, Mowree, Lexicon Avenue, Architect, Committee, Low End Specialists, Dan Robbins, King-Size, Eric Kupper, Mert Yucel, Dylan, K-Traxx, High Voltage, K-Traxx, PCP, Ce Ce Lee, Atlantis ITA, Pathfinder, Jason “Jinx” Zambito, Tecmania Rebel, Patrick van der Hart, Public Domain, Sarasite, etc.

DJ VIBE (DJ MAG) "So Get Up"

The former Underground Sound of Lisbon producer (with Rui Da Silva) - who had a huge club hit with 'So Get Up' (featuring original vocals and lyrics by renowned California songwriter, Ithaka Darin Pappas) in the mid-'90s - is currently excited about Logic 8 and Serato, with the digital music controller changing not just the way he buys music but also the way he programmes his sets. He matches Serato with three CDJs, Cycloops and the FX1000 to get truly creative in the mix, all of which suits his big room sound.
Those rooms have been as big as Twilo Miami for the WMC and Lux in Lisbon's 8th anniversary party - "One of the best parties in the last year".

“So Get Up” - Acid House Dos Anos 90 em Londres

Hannah DeuPree on "So Get Up" [Magnetic Magazine}

With some of the most powerful combo-trance tracks in EDM culture, Cosmic Gate is back with another banger track, "So Get Up" on their brand new label: Wake Your Mind Records.

So Get Up is a powerful, earth moving large track which first premiered on Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance radio show, and has been a highly anticipated release ever since.

This track has it all, from progressive hyper-infectious pitch bent synths and electro-house influenced quick-fire drops to trance driven EQ-driven peaks- all which surround the never-forgotten vocals that stream melodies through your mind.

Alex Di Stefano is the new artist in the tech trance scene that makes serious waves with dark thumping basslines, full on techy grooves and magnificent breakdown that utilize the vocal samples and the synthy hooks in the finest fashion. The climax is rough and tough perfect to rock this universe and beyond.
